Cracking Youtube

Update: As of 5/21/07, I think YouTube rigged it so it doesnt update your video views, only your channel views. Thanks to reader Mario for pointing this out.

Mashable recently posted about a user named “SuperMoviesDownload” getting top results on YouTube consistently, and trying to charge $10,000 to allow people to get a top video on YouTube. Mashable says that “it was easy to enter the Most Viewed list on YouTube just by opening some tabs in Firefox and setting them to auto-refresh – no real skill required.” That’s what Mashable said. This is what they meant…

—- BEGIN file hackYoutube.html —-

<html>
<head>
<title>Youtube Pwn.</title>
<meta http-equiv=”refresh” content=”2;url=hackYoutube.html”>
</head>

<body>
<iframe src=”http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dSJzy16mmGc” width=”50%”>
</iframe>
</body>
</html>

—- END file hackYoutube.html —-

That youtube link is to a video of one of my iswapyou magic online tutorials. In case it isn’t glaringly obvious, you’d need to change that iframe link to your video. And yes, you literally open this page in multiple firefox or IE tabs, walk away, and a few hours later have a “most viewed” video. I am posting this because:

1. According to Mashable, “Eric Schmidt was asked about the problem at a recent interview (pointed out to us by The CoMotion Group), but downplayed the problem. It seems that a fix would be easy and straightforward: why not go ahead and fix it up?”

2. Seriously, YouTube, i don’t believe for a second that those talented Google engineers you gained in the merger can’t fix this.

NOTE: For everyone who wants to test this for themself, YouTube only updates its view statistics every few hours (i.e. YOU WILL NOT SEE ANY RESULTS FOR A FEW HOURS). Please stop commenting that this “doesn’t work”.

    Forgive a retard question…where does the code go? Thx.

  2. Justin says:

    In a file. Called hackYoutube.html. Thats what i meant by “—- BEGIN file hackYoutube.html —-” “—- END file hackYoutube.html —-”.

  3. Adam says:

    Hey thanks for the response via email. YouTube only updates views ever few hours so don’t be impatient like me! This code rocks! You guys have anymore tricks up your sleeves? E-mail me. :)

    @Anna N.
    You have to host this on a webpage for it to work. Just make a single page for this code, insert your own vid link, upload it, and open as many firefox tabs as you want and away you go.

  4. Justin says:

    @Adam
    Feel free to subscribe to the RSS feed or bookmark. I’ll be posting things like this from time to time.

  5. Larg says:

    This does work, and there’s an asshole account GeoffMendicino that employs this stunt everywhere he goes.

  6. dion says:

    Better still, you could just download this add-on (i dont remember the exact name, may be its “Auto-Refresh”) for firefox and then all you need to do is right click on the required page and select “Reload every X seconds”!!

  7. Mario says:

    Hi, I’ve a problem, i think something is wrong with the code ive entered. If i enter my YouTube video URL with “….” then it doesn’t work. If i enter the URL without ” ” then the iframe shows the video but doesn’t refresh.

  8. lilo says:

    @ mario :
    hi you have to put away the “” around refresh in line four. then it works..

  9. Justin says:

    @lilo – Weird, I tested it with Firefox 2.0 and IE 6 and both worked fine.

  10. Mario says:

    I’ve tried it several day, but it doesn’t count the views! Can you help?

  11. Ryan says:

    Could someone be more specific in how and where I post this code? Is it able to work with myspace, because I don’t have a real webpage of my own. Any help would be great, thx

  12. Justin says:

    Lol. Dudes, i didn’t post this to help anyone hack or game YouTube. I wrote it to clarify what Mashable was talking about. If you don’t understand, please, the best thing you can do for yourself is ask your tech savvy nephew, or take a HTML tutorial.

    I don’t condone or encourage anyone trying to game, hack or crack YouTube with this code, so if you’re doing that you’re kind of on your own. But if you’re trying to understand it without actually performing the hack, that is certainly ok.

    @Ryan – Any browser (IE, Firefox) can read html code in a file ending with “.html”. I really can’t get more specific than that.

    @Mario – Your tech savvy nephew or the W3 Schools HTML tutorial can help you. I do not have the time or resources to teach you everything. Sorry. Really wish i did. Feel free to ask more specific questions though, and welcome to the site.

    @dion – The firefox plugin is called “ReloadEvery”. Thanks for letting me know about that – I didn’t know it existed. Makes it seem even sillier that they aren’t closing this hole.

  13. Mario says:

    And that’s the point, I still don’t believe that it works. Im not a newbie at html I can make homepages and upload them. All fine and good. It works, with the “Channel Views”, but it doesnt’t work with videos. In case I’m just too stupid, please show me http://youtube.com/watch?v=scLRPCcuGZk . Thanks you for a reply.

    yours

    mario

  14. Justin says:

    @Mario – My apologies, you may be right as of today. I think YouTube rigged it so it doesn’t update your video views, only your channel views.

  15. MusicVideoPlayer says:

    It works/worked, as of 5/21/07, it no longer works…

  16. Mario says:

    So as they fixed the bug is there any other chance to get popular or hack the system?

  17. x360c.com says:

    Use a proxy!

  18. [...] closed the browser refresh hack… mostly, but not quite.

  19. Justin says:

    @x360.com – Actually, you using one proxy will only give you one hit… you need to use many proxies like i describe in Part 2 of the Cracking YouTube series

  20. BigShot says:

    It does not work anymore…i used a reloader for my one video and the first 2 days it worked…then my video got deleted and not its weird..I upload a video, reload it and after it gets to pass 200 views, it stops counting, i continue to do it for hours, till it updates again, but it always just updates around 200 more views.

    Anyone know what is wrong?

  21. ahhhh says:

    do you have to have firefox for this?

  22. ppppppp says:

    hey how do you set your tabs to auto refresh?

  23. Katie says:

    Quick question.. Im trying the method of getting the Firefox plug-in to “Refresh Your Page Every X Amount Of Seconds” but Im just wondering.. Does your view count on a video and/or Channel go up when your on your Account? Or do I need to go on a different Account to get my views up? Hope that made sense. Thanks.

  24. Nic says:

    Does it work if you do it on your own computer? apparently youtube have set a limit on the amount of refreshes you can do…

  25. Terry Nova says:

    LOVE your blog, thanks for entertaining me
    Hope there will be more posts soon
    regards, terry
    ps – sorry im not that good in writing in english because I came from europe – but i understand a lot

  26. JustMe says:

    It looks like they’re taking steps to stem this practice; just tried it and it limits to around 200 hits per update. Are you aware of any ways around this?

  27. hi says:

    You could also download Advanced key and mouse recorder. Then you can make your own marco. It works for me :)
    You can download it on warez sites
    Or you can buy it on
    http://www.macro-expert.com/mouse-recorder/key-and-mouse-recorder.htm

  28. Ovidiu says:

    You can download Avant browser , a small browser that opens how many windows you want . On every window hit Refresh after 10 seconds. If you open 6 , after an hour you have 2160 views ;) ) . Have fun !

  29. zma says:

    what is the add on name for auto refresh?????

  30. PaulSunday1 says:

    Ovidiu, you can’t make more than 200 views at a time. You have to wait 6 hours and do it again. I tried with Mozilla and with Avant but it can’t pass this limit. Perhaps YouTube restricted the number of views per IP.
    Does anyone know how can this be bypassed?

  31. DevilPatron says:

    they can do everything, why we are here to discuss about HACK or Not HACK… FIGHT THE POWER!!!

  32. EzMoney says:

    or if you just want ur videos watched to go high…. create an html…

    copy and paste your embedded youtube video 6-8 times

    put the auto-refresh code at the top of your notepad (seperate video and refresh by about 4 spaces) and open it, and go on with your day.

  33. a says:

    not a good idead, it will use your banthwith so youll pay you isp a fortune :-(

  34. gamerz1o1 says:

    So if I understand this right, I have to upload this code to a single webpage on my site. and then?

  35. Hi!! says:

    Hi thanks for the tip!!
    just take out alll the comments of code (“”)
    and works!!
    to the next tip, please how to crack channels xD ^^

  36. Ben Kling says:

    To ‘EzMoney’:

    Your html solution won’t work, because embedded videos don’t automatically play,
    so the page would keep refreshing videos that wouldn’t start loading.

    You can set a video to play automatically upon pageload by adding ‘&autoplay=1′ to the end of the URL in the embed code, and you can loop the video by adding ‘$loop=1′ after that,

    but YouTube is smarter than you, and doesn’t count either of those as views.

    Even if you do find a way to take advantage of the system, you shouldn’t.

    YouTube is a great system for promoting worthwhile content based on what people want to see. It’s more democratic than most showcases of user-submitted content.

    If it were within the power of every person to exploit this system, it would collapse.

    In addition, consider the fact that the geniuses over at Google will most likely discover you and remove your video and possibly your account.

    Is it worth the risk?

    Not for me, at least.

    So try and accrue views the old-fashioned way: networking, forwarding, etc.

    It may be more difficult, but if your content is worth viewing, it will pay off.

  37. Charlie says:

    JUST DOWNLOAD OPERA AND AUTO-REFRESH!! EASY! DONE!

  38. 3at0 says:

    i dont get it

  39. youtuber says:

    is there a way to bypass youtube’s comment limiting system where if you type in a comment then you type another on the same page you sometimes get that “commenting limit exceeded” message is there a browser hack you can do to override that so you can keep commenting without posting the captcha or no, youtube has ate a few comments of mine this way and some comments are very slow to post and if i click on another vid the comment isnt posted

  40. axwq says:

    the way to get more views is to get the auto refresh and right click on any video page and then go down to refresh every X seconds or custom and open multiple tabs while doing this.
    You must have firefox and you have to be monitoring it while doing it. note your views when you started. then do the hack or trick whatever. when you view count goes 200+ (or less) more than what you started with close firefox and then unplug your internet cable. then an icon will appear in the icon tray. it will look like to computers with an X in the corner of it. click it normally and then a window will appear then go to the main one that was just unplugged. I forget the rest but ihope i got you all far enough to this!

  41. erzsa says:

    —- BEGIN file hackYoutube.html —-

    Youtube Pwn.

  42. ziki says:

    where do i find the file hackyoutube.html

  43. Muhammad Abdul Alim Salleh says:

    this hack doesnt work anymore bcoz youtube has upgrade system.. they use cookies.. just goole for tube increaser.. download the software.. anything.. email me.. i got the latest with crack for tube increaser..

  44. Mayur says:

    If your logged into your own Youtube account can you still do this or because since it’s your video views won’t be added?

  45. Blargidarghi says:

    I’ve tried this over night last night, I got 600 channel views and 200 video views on about 5 of my videos (i had multiple tabs open)

    I used the firefox way.

    You wan’t to use this script, put it on multiple, prehaps 5 ‘free web hosts’ then have them on new tabs auto-refreshing overnight, since they’re different IP’s you should get the views.

    I could do this on one of my servers as i’ve got 12 IP’s on one of my servers, then i’ve got another 3 servers with 1 ip each, so i might try this, If you would like a script like this on my servers reply (costs $10 for a 1day link on 2 IP’s).

    Extra Info:
    Days = $5
    IPs = $3
    Per 200MB Bandwidth = $2

  46. jaraleo says:

    Ya, this code was relly useful,I get more than 3k of views in just one day to one of my videos.
    1. remove the ” of the code, paste it in a text editor. (follow the instructions of the post creator)
    2. change the url 2 the video u want.
    3. login with another acount (not urs)
    4. use firefox and open lot windows (dont abuse, do it acording to ur internet speed).
    5. wait all night =)
    ———-
    But does no work anymore xDDD
    it will only increase ur videos wieved, no the views of ur videos T_T

  47. mike says:

    hey i dont know how to use the code lol plz someone tell meeeee

  48. Sam says:
